An introduction to the study of the characteristics, functions and induction of altered states of consciousness.
PSYCHOLOGY 206 - CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHOLOGY.
A study of the phenomenology of consciousness and behavior exhibited in the life of a human being from birth to adolescence. In child psychology emphasis is given to the maturation of the physiological and psychological processes up to the onset of puberty. In adolescent psychology, emphasis is given to the maturation of glandular, emotional and mental processes.

Patterns of child behavior and development including physical, cognitive and social growth. A comprehensive review of leading child rearing theories and methods. Group discussions of parental problems and alternative solutions in contemporary society.

An introduction to the theories and principles of the Unconscious, the nature of the human psyche, the archetypes, the function of symbols, and the nature of dreams. An approach to the study of human types and personality classifications.

PSYCHOLOGY 214 - HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY.
A contemporary development in psychology which rejects the materialistic, epiphenomenalistic, cerebrocentric, and behavioristic approach to the understanding of human nature. It focuses attention on the study of such qualities of human nature as are distinctly human, such as peak experiences of various kinds, the religious experience, the meditative- philosophical- contemplative experience, and other high points of consciousness which are both deeply personal as well as transpersonal.

A study and practice of various methods and techniques of meditation. (Emphasis in this course is on actual meditation).
PSYCHOLOGY 224 - SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE SOUL.
Scientific Evidence of the Existence of the Soul from the phenomena of memory, sleep, dreams, hypnotism, extrasensory perception, out-of-body-experiences, psychedelics, and near-death-experiences. Consideration is given to consciousness and its relation to the mind and the brain.

A comparative study of emotional theories, Eastern and Western. A study of the nature and origin of feelings and emotions, in both personal and transpersonal dimensions. The psycho-physical interaction of emotional processes. Understanding emotions and human behavior.
PSYCHOLOGY 241 - PSYCHOLOGY OF SELF-ESTEEM.
An in-depth analysis of self-esteem; its implications and applications from the micro to the macro level. The Systems Model of Human Experience provides the framework for studying and exploring the relationships of low self-esteem and provides a means for creating happy, healthy, productive individuals in a society that works for everyone.
PSYCHOLOGY 242 - PSYCHOLOGY OF LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS.
Works of such authors as D. H. Lawrence and James Joyce will be compared with the psychological basis of love according to Carl Jung, Erich Fromm, B. F. Skinner, and Abraham Maslow.
PSYCHOLOGY 243 - COUNSELING IN FAMILY COMMUNICATIONS AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS.
The art of communicating in a loving consciousness way. Field work centered on individual growth with meaningful research in the field of communication. Assigned readings.
PSYCHOLOGY 245 - PSYCHOLOGY OF DREAM CONSCIOUSNESS.
An introduction to the study of levels of consciousness, with special emphasis on Dream Consciousness. A comparison of the Freudian and Jungian idea of the dream-state and the Eastern idea of svapna. Contemporary research on dreams in Western psychology.
PSYCHOLOGY 255 - PERSONALITY PSYCHOLOGY, EAST AND WEST.
This course will survey the major personality theories generated by Western psychology, as well as look at the views of Zen Buddhism, Yoga and Sufism as they concern personal growth. The course will be oriented toward the practical understanding of human nature and assessing its applicability to each or our own lives.
PSYCHOLOGY 256 - PSYCHOLOGY OF THE FEMININE PRINCIPLE.
Course will include the Feminist Movement; Archetypes of the Feminine; the views of Adler, Erikson, Jung, Freud, Abraham Maslow; an East-West look at "self-actualizing" women: Sarada Devi and Mother Teresa; and the thoughts of Sri Sathya Sai Baba on woman's divinity.
PSYCHOLOGY 262 - INTRODUCTION TO HYPNOTISM.
A beginning study of the uses of hypnotism in therapy, otherwise called hypnotherapy. Principles and techniques are discussed in the use of hypnotism in childbirth, behavior modification, dentistry, anesthesia and other medical areas.
PSYCHOLOGY 265 - INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELING.
An overview of psychological counseling. A variety of practical techniques useful in counseling persons in need, as well as major approaches to counseling. Subjects covered include; communication, active listening, marriage and family problems, death, dying, anxiety, depression, diagnosis and referral. Also techniques for personal change and control of ones own life through self-help, psychological and astrological methods.
PSYCHOLOGY 270 - PSYCHOLOGY OF HEALING.
A study of the mind-body relationship. The art and science of creating health by the re-education of the person in terms of the laws of nature as well as establishing harmony between body, mind and spirit. Different techniques of spiritual healing and touch therapy will be considered.
PSYCHOLOGY 281 - SELF COUNSELING.
This course teaches self-recognition of problem patterns, levels of self-esteem, emotional, mental and spiritual balancing on an individual and group basis. Students are given psychological and regression techniques that allow more choices in life; self truth and the ability to handle responsibility.
PSYCHOLOGY 282 - GERONTOLOGY AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF AGING
A broad overview of the major research findings, theoretical concepts and methodology of developmental psychology, with specific emphasis on the older adult. The aging process examined from biological, psychological, social, political and spiritual perspectives.
PSYCHOLOGY 298 - SPECIAL TOPICS SEMINAR.
Special topic seminars cover material not found elsewhere in the curriculum.
PSYCHOLOGY 299 - INDEPENDENT STUDY/RESEARCH.
An individualized course for students who would like to engage in indepth study or research on a particular topic of their choosing. The topic must be approved by a faculty member, who will serve as an advisor for the duration of the project.
